I just finished a great interview with a guy that I met a few years ago at the AMA Vintage National at SDR. Fumi did this interview with me as he was headed to Savanna, Georgia for some Flat track racing. Good luck to all the racers that traveled south for bike week 2014. Enjoy this interview.

Name: Fumihisa Matsueda
Age: 35
Home town: Ashikaga Japan
Occupation: Student

When did you start your racing career and where?
I started Flat Track Race in this country which was…2008

What is your favorite surface to race on and track?
Hard packed smooth clay short track.
Oakland valley speedway in NY
Volusia short track in FL

Who did you, or even still do you look up to in your sport and why?
George Rickmyer, Craig Estelle, Shane Livington, Dave Aldana
Why? because those guys are crazy to me!

What is your most memorable moment so far in flat track racing?
This is gonna be a loooong story.
15 years ago in Japan, I bought one magazine called “Street Bikers”.
This magazine usually has a full page in a dead middle of magazine about Flat Track in USA.
I always rip the page off and put it as a poster on my wall.
One time, Old hand shift WR Harley Davidon was on the page.
I was so shocked!!
What a cool bike!! and actually somebody is racing on this bike in USA???
I still has the poster on my wall in my parents house.
Anyway, 10 years later I came here to the States, and started Flat Track Racing for fun.
I had a chance to go down Daytona to AMA Vintage National Race.
That was Savannah GA, I was walking around pit and taking some photos.
There was old hand shift WR Harley.
I was like Wow! this is a cool bike!!
It is super georges.
Then one old guy showed up with leather from the truck behind the bike.
He was like “Do you like this bike?”
I said “Yes! this is very cool looking bike!”
He turned around then back to truck and grabed one magazine.
“Do you know this magazine??”

Yes, that’s the magazine I saw 10 years ago and that’s the bike I still have a poster then this is the guy George Wills right there.
I was so excited and explain about 10 years ago like this.
Then, George pointed the other side and said “thats the guy who took this photo!”
Also this was the first time I met Shogo who has been taking Flat Track photos for 29 years.
That day, I met two guys they hooked me up to interesting in this Flat Track World in one shot!

During your racing career what has been your biggest disappointment. Is there a race that got away from you or a championship that you have always wanted to get but just haven’t been able to reach?
I don’t have any racing career.
I’m just doing this race for fun, so there is no disappointment YET!

Who have you enjoyed racing against? and what rider do you wish you could have raced with that isn’t racing any more?
Anybody line up nest to me at start line.
Specially Nick Weimer from up state NY, from my very tiny race experiece but allways he is the kid in front of me.
Craig Estelle and Shane Livingston, One time I was on a same podium with them.
Those guys were battling each other and I chased them, ended up 3rd with them.
It made my whole my race career! I was so pleased with standing with them at same podium.

What are your goals for the 2014 season?
Having a good time and come back with one piece.

What is one piece of advice you would give a young or new rider as they enter this great sport?
Im stil young and dont have enough experiences to open my mouth but
If you like this sports, try it.
You don’t know untill you start, you are good or not.
Not only this sport, anything try it then you decide.

Do you ever plan on riding a new style bike or will you stay on the vintage bikes?
to me, steel frame, motor has tons of weight with steel, twin shocks and carburetor.
Thats the Motorcycle I think.
Also Im doing this race just for fun.
most important thing is I take my favorite bike to the race bike and race it!!
that’s all about it.
